Taylor&Emmet keeps Royle sponsorship in family

An exhibition dedicated to landscape painter, Stanley Royle, has revealed links between sponsor, Taylor&Emmet LLP and the local artist run deeper than a shared love of Sheffield.

Stanley Royle’s great, great niece works at the solicitors and one of the most significant works in the exhibition was donated to Museums Sheffield by her grandfather.

Legal secretary, Natalie Packer, is a direct descendant of Stanley Royle and her family still owns several original paintings. She joined Taylor&Emmet in 2013 and supports a trio of probate specialists at the firm’s Arundel Gate headquarters.

Taylor&Emmet is backing Museums Sheffield’s first major retrospective of Royle’s work for more than 30 years, which is running at the Graves Gallery until May 30. It features a collection of landscapes, including his last painting, Mevagissey, Cornwall (1960), given to the city by Natalie’s grandfather, Robert Packer, in the 1970s.

Diana Smart, Taylor&Emmet’s head of probate, said: “We were completely unaware of any direct links to Royle when we entered into this partnership with Museums Sheffield. The firm is always looking for innovative ways to reinforce our commitment to the local community and discovering Natalie’s family history has really enabled staff to connect with the exhibition. We are pleased to be helping the city pay tribute to such an important contributor to our cultural heritage.”

Stanley Royle (1888 to 1961) exhibited at the Royal Academy, having spent his formative years in the Ecclesfield area of Sheffield and attended the city’s School of Art where he went on to teach. Royle depicted many local scenes threatened by industrialisation, before moving to Canada in 1931 to pursue his teaching career. He returned to Britain in 1945 and continued to paint prolifically.
