Setting the Standards in First Aid Training

Middlesbrough based company, Life Aid Training, is setting new standards in First Aid Training with a unique approach to teaching that has seen its training results soar and the company employ new staff members, with further expansion plans in the pipeline.

Life Aid Training specialises in providing first aid training courses to employees in the workplace, offering new higher standards of training with the majority of learners gaining an 80%+ perfect CPR rating. The company achieves this through a recruitment process which focuses on a trainer’s teaching ability. The company then carries out systematic training so instructors understand learning, barriers to learning and fresh teaching methods. Along with this the company offers one of the best teacher to student ratios in the country with a maximum of 8 learners per course in comparison with the usual 12. This is a move which Managing Director Bob Campbell believes makes them the best in the industry.

“Providing employees with good quality first aid training is something that is often overlooked. Even in low risk environments employees can suffer injuries or take ill with incidents including heart attacks, diabetic hypos or choking. The care administered in the 8 minutes before the emergency services arrive is vital. It’s imperative to have, not only a workforce that can provide immediate attention in these kinds of scenarios, but first aiders who excel in saving lives and who have the confidence to engage. That is exactly what Life Aid Training was set up to offer”.

The unique approach to teaching is working well for the company which has recently taken on a new Sales Manager as well as securing work with some of the region’s most prominent companies including MACAW Engineering and The Wilton Group.

“Our approach to teaching is all about learners having self-belief, being able to recognise the conditions they are facing and having first class life saving skills. In a life or death situation this is critical. Individuals often feel a great deal of pressure at the prospect of being responsible for someone’s life and so we teach in a way that ensures skills are stored as long term memory, enabling the individual to go into auto-pilot in an emergency situation”, explained Bob.

Life Aid Training also provides a complete written report on each learner’s strengths and weaknesses. This provides employers with the evidence and confidence that they have a group of strong and able First Aiders in their team and can engage the best first aiders in an emergency situation. The company also provide first aider insurance as part of their training packages.

A change in First Aid Regulations 18 months ago now means that employers are responsible for ensuring their first aid standards are both ‘adequate and appropriate’.

Speaking about the change Bob explained, “To be ‘adequate and appropriate’ you have to have confidence in your first aiders. As a company we have identified what employers need to have real confidence in their first aiders and we have put measures in place to ensure this. Every First Aider we have trained really can save lives and we give our clients the means to prove it”.

“All employers are now legally required to carry out compliant First Aid Risk Assessments. We can provide free accredited courses that make this a quick and easy process. Because all of our training qualifications are Ofqual regulated, our clients can rest assured knowing we have all of the required industry standards - saving them considerable time, money and administration in validating this.”

Life Aid Training provide standard and specialist first aid and defibrillator courses for a wide range of companies throughout the North East and other regions.
