Top ten acts of kindness to do in the workplace
New research from glo suggests Britain is a nation of good Samaritans, as 60% of Brits feeling motivated to do good deeds for the positive difference they make. With a third of Brits admitting they do a good deed every fortnight, what can we do in the workplace to make a positive difference for our co-workers.
- Bring in sweet treats: Whether you’re a master baker, or simply walking past the supermarket on your way in, bringing in some sweet treats for your co-workers to enjoy with a cup of tea is bound to raise the spirits in the office.
- Put the coffee on: If you’re the first person in the office in the morning, why not put the coffee on so it’s ready for your co-workers? Not only is this a good deed, but you’ll also get first dibs!
- Wash the mugs: When you’re washing your mug at the end of the day, you could always use some of that hot water to clean your co-workers mugs should they be by the sink. They’ll appreciate this little boost if they’re having a busy day.
- Answer the phone: If your co-worker is away from their desk and their phone rings, pick it up for rather than letting it run off, this shows you’re keen to help out wherever you can.
- Cover if a co-worker is late: If a co-worker is late for work, try and help out by covering for them. You could even pick up a few of their smaller tasks if you have some spare time, as you know they’ll be rushed!
- A pat on the back: Something as simple as a pat on the back after giving a presentation can make you feel so much happier - try to compliment your co-workers after a difficult task, and they will return the favour in your time of need.
- Volunteer to cover for holidays: If you know your co-workers jobs almost as well as your own, why not volunteer to cover while they’re away? Chances are they will be able to help you out in the future.
- Get a round in after work: Heading to the pub after work on Friday? Why not offer to buy a round of drinks for your co-workers, you’ll find them repaying you for weeks to come.
- Return lost property: Whether it’s a wallet or a mobile phone, you should always return lost property to its rightful owner - the good feeling you get from this deed will outweigh the benefits of keeping someone else’s property.
- Smile: According to glo, 60% of people rate their personal happiness between 7-10/10, so why not share this gift with a smile
Research by glo shows that 40% of happiness is in your control, and carrying out acts of kindness in the workplace is one of the best ways to make a positive difference.
