North East Companies Urged To "Enter The Dragon"

NORTH East businesses and charities are being asked to show their competitive spirit and raise money at the same time – by taking part in a unique fundraising event.

On September 5 Hetton Lyons Country Park at Hetton-le-Hole will be hosting a Dragon Boat Race, organised by the region’s Rotary Clubs.

And now the gauntlet has been thrown down to groups, companies, families and friends to get a team together and take part in what promises to be a great day out.

Each boat holds a team of 20 and costs £400 – equivalent to just £20 a person.

Proceeds from the event will be divided between The Great North Air Ambulance and each team’s own chosen charity.

Races will take place throughout the day with a number of prizes on offer, before a grand finale to crown the champion of the day.

The event – which runs from 10am until 4pm – will be part of a full day of activities at the park, ensuring it will be a great day out for the entire family.

“The Dragon Boat Race has something to offer everyone,” said Fiona Swan, Chair of the Dragon Boat Organising Group.

“It’s a great opportunity for companies to create a team building activity, for charities to raise money and for everyone, generally, to have a fantastic experience.

“Proceeds will be split between various charities, many of which will be chosen by the teams themselves, so it’s a great way for businesses to support causes that are important to them too.”

The new charity event is just one of the initiatives organised by Rotary North East, which works to support people in need across the region.

Teams wishing to take part must submit their entry form and a deposit of £100 as soon as possible in order to secure their place. The full balance must then be paid by August 26.
