Venn Group Contract Recruitment Index

“Monitoring contractor demand across the North East“
Contract Recruitment Index highlights
- There was a 1% rise in jobs month-on-month
- Domestic and commercial property drives regional growth
- TechNorth continues to attract the top digital talent
- Hourly rates have risen 6% month-on-month
Overall numbers of job vacancies remain consistent, with a 1% increase in May
The May 2015 North East Recruitment Index recorded a 1% month-on-month increase in job availability with 3,066 vacancies advertised, compared to 3,036 in April 2015.
Stan Murray Hession, Director of Venn Group, commented:
“The Index has revealed that the North East’s housing market shot up over the last year, reflected in the increase in house prices – a rise of 7.3% in Leeds alone. Following this, we are seeing huge demand for conveyancing locums in the area, who are currently receiving rates of £35 per hour – nearly double the average rate for contractors in the North East.
“Demand for commercial property has also risen, indicating investor confidence in the region. With advances such as Sheffield City Council’s recent triumph in relocating the proposed HS2 station to their city centre transport hub – potentially creating up to 7,000 more jobs locally – business investment looks set to continue. “
Contractors’ rates increase as a result of boom in demand
The average rate for those securing jobs in May 2015 was 6% higher than those recorded in April 2015, with contractors now receiving an average of £18 per hour across the region.
Stan Murray Hession continued:
“In more good news for the North East, the popularity of TechNorth, a government initiative to boost the region’s tech sector, remains unprecedented, with many UK IT leaders admitting that they would rather work with Northern companies than their London counterparts. This boom in IT and digital has resulted in high demand for professionals, who are commanding high rates – for example, project mobilisation managers received an average of £340 per day – well over the average daily rate. It seems that TechNorth will remain a strong business draw to an already blossoming region.”
