Job losses at Carlisle and Warrington sites of DB Schenker
Over 200 jobs across the North are expected to be lost at sites of DB Schenker.
The company said this is due to the demand for coal declining much faster than the industry could have predicted.
Some of those job losses are expected at sites in Carlisle and Warrington.
DB Schenker Rail UK issued a statement in which it said: “We are currently in consultation with our colleagues and Trades Union partners to discuss the proposed changes to our business.
“We are committed to discussing all alternative proposals from our employee groups and we will only confirm which roles and locations are affected once these consultations are concluded.”
Chief executive Geoff Spencer said: “Responsible businesses take decisions to positively position themselves for the future.
“We must transform and reshape our organisation to ensure our long term success by evolving to meet the needs of a rapidly changing market.
“I know this is an unsettling time for colleagues who may be affected and we are committed to keeping them fully informed and supported throughout this process.”
