Agent Embarks On ‘Generation Game’ For Expansion Of Estate Agency Business

A Derby based estate and lettings agency is today championing the benefits of the family run business, after the directors’ son joined the company in a bid to expand the sales side to the business.

Martin & Co Derby is already owned by husband and wife team, Sian Turner and David McKnight, but after their son, Chris (23) graduated with a Masters degree from The University of London, he became the third member of the family to join the business.

Chris joined the team in January bringing fresh ideas and new enthusiasm to the team, and he has already increased the number of exchanges by 183%.

David McKnight said: “It is fantastic news that Chris has decided to join the family business after graduation. He has already transformed the sales side to the business and I am delighted to report that we now have 30% more sales agreed than in the previous year, which is testament to all of his hard work and training.”

Latest figures from the 2014 PWC Family Business Survey found that 65% of family businesses reported growth in the last twelve months and 15% of these, are now aiming to grow aggressively over the next five years, something echoed at Martin & Co Derby.

Sian Turner, finance director at the firm said: “David and I have been together for 30 years, which is a rarity these days, and we have a very close family unit.

“We all have complementary sets of skills and we enjoy working together as a family towards one common goal. I truly believe that more people should look into starting a family run business. For us, it provides us with a better quality of life because the decisions are all ours, and because we have sole ownership, we can provide a much better service to our clients.”
