Yorkshire Pupils Inspire as they Graduate with Honours

35 high achieving youngsters and 11 mothers from schools in Yorkshire took centre stage at a graduation ceremony held at Leeds Trinity University yesterday.

The schools that attended the event were Armley Primary, Five Lanes Primary and Miriam Lord Community Primary Schools and all took part in the programme throughout the summer 2015 term.

Mosaic supporter Mumtaz Shafi was the inspirational guest speaker for the graduation ceremony. Having spent many years in the telecommunications industry, Mumtaz went on to set up her own consultancy and now contracts directly with major telecoms providers including Telefonica and Vodafone. Outside of work, Mumtaz is passionate about creating and supporting change and is involved with various charities including the Islamic Society of Britain, Altrincham Muslim Association as well as Mosaic. She spends much of her time getting involved in other charitable works and in November 2011, completed a five day 550km charity bike ride cycling from Vietnam to Cambodia to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

In addition to all of this, Mumtaz is a wife and mother of two and actively involves herself in her own children’s development as well as supporting other local mothers to seek and gain help regarding education and development for their children.

Mumtaz Shafi said: “It was an honour to speak at this event and meet such an outstanding group of young girls who have come so far and achieved so much as a result of the Mosaic Primary School Programme. I myself was inspired by the great presentations the girls gave and the confidence they displayed. Mosaic’s primary school mentoring programme is working very well in the Yorkshire region and the achievements of the girls and their mums is proof of that. Well done to all involved – a truly inspirational achievement.”

Leah Larkin, Mosaic’s Yorkshire Regional Co-ordinator said: “The girls and their mothers taking part deserve the praise and recognition for all the time and effort they have put in. The graduation provided the perfect platform to say well done to all our mentors, girls and their mothers. It also provides an opportunity to thank the brilliant schools and their staff who do so much to make our programmes a success in the local community.”
