World Flag Day takes off at Happy Jays nursery in Batley

Children at Happy Days Nursery in Batley have put the flags out in order to mark Flag Day.

The nursery - one of the six-strong Happy Jays group of private nurseries across Yorkshire - has taught children about flags across different countries to celebrate the occasion. Activities included colouring in flags, creating an outdoor ‘flag den’ and tasting foods from various countries and cultures.

Margaret Pollard, nursery manager, said: “The idea of celebrating world Flag Day was suggested by one of our staff members a few years ago during the world cup furore. It has now become an annual activity with the children relishing learning about all the colourful flags and which countries they belong to.”

The origin of Flag Day dates back to 1777 - commemorating the adoption of the United States flag.

Established in 1968, Happy Jays in Batley provides a variety of special weeks, days and months for children to enjoy including Fruity Fridays, child safety week and national smile month.

Happy Jays provides Ofsted registered nursery and childcare in Batley, Harrogate, Boroughbridge, York and Scarborough.
