Multi-million pound Durham spa granted licence

A new multi-million pound luxury spa, currently under development in Durham, has been granted its premises licence in readiness for its official opening in July.

Ramside Estates Ltd, owner of Ramside Hall Hotel and Golf Club, is investing £16m in a scheme which will create a spa to complement the luxury hotel and golf facilities already on site.

Part of the investment has already funded 47 new hotel rooms and suites as well development of a second 18-hole golf course.

For this latest phase of growth at the venue Ramside Estates enlisted the help of Swinburne Maddison LLP (Swinburne Maddison), one of Durham’s leading law firms, who advised on the successful premises licence application.

Swinburne Maddison has a longstanding relationship with Ramside Estates and the firm’s property team was instrumental to the company negotiating and completing a Section 106 Agreement, which led to Durham County Council’s planning department consenting to an extension to the hotel, as well as advising on the sale of a development site: the funds from which have facilitated this latest exciting development.

The law firm also advised on the sale of individual self-build plots at Ramside Park.

The new spa will provide hotel guests and members with a fantastic array of facilities including a 25m swimming pool, four hydro pools, 14 treatment rooms, a dance studio, hair salon, infinity pool spa and a Rasul mud chamber. It will also feature saunas and a range of steam rooms.

John Adamson, the man behind Ramside Estates said: “I am delighted with the progress that we are making on the spa and obtaining the premises licence takes us an integral step closer towards our opening.

“The luxurious facilities and beautifully designed spa will not only be a great addition to the hotel and golf club offering, it will also be great for the local area as it raises the bar in relation to what’s on offer so close to Durham city.

“The premises licence will allow the new spa to offer the ultimate guest experience, whether that be a glass of champagne in the outside spa, a refreshing cocktail next to the pool or something to eat in Fusion, our new Asian restaurant.”

Solicitor Giles McCourt who provided the specialist licensing advice on this occasion worked closely with Kate Stephenson, a partner with Swinburne Maddison’s commercial property team.
