Leesman Index reaches 100,000 responses milestone
The Leesman Index, the world’s largest independent measure of workplace effectiveness, now has more than 100,000 respondents in its database. The announcement was made today (9 July) by Tim Oldman, founder and CEO of Leesman, at the organisation’s ‘Workplace in the Spotlight’ conference, an event hosted jointly by two of the biggest users of the Index, HOK and Veldhoen + company.
Since its launch in 2010, 850 workplaces in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors have used the tool to better understand how their workplace supports their employees; and what changes could be made to boost productivity and organisational performance.
Over the past five years, the Index has grown to include not just offices, but also higher education facilities through Leesman Campus and My Uni View.
“We reached data stability at 70,000 respondents but the 100,000 milestone represents a major achievement,” said Oldman. “Before the Leesman Index, there were numerous occupancy survey tools offered by different organisations, but no independent, standardised employee-focused functionality and effectiveness test for the workplace. The success of our open-source Index demonstrates how important it is for organisations to have insight into how employees are supported in the workplace, and what areas need to be focused on to improve performance.”
The 100,000 milestone comes at the same time that Leesman announces the appointment of Chris Moriarty as development director. Moriarty, who previously worked at the British Institute of Facilities Management, where he led the Workplace Conversation project, will sit on Leesman’s leadership team supporting growth both in the UK and across international territories.

About the Leesman Index
Leesman was founded in early 2010. Since then it has been measuring the relationship between people and place in organisations of varying sizes, sectors and global reach.
With data from more than 100,000 respondents, the Leesman Index is the largest independent measure of workplace effectiveness. Captured through an online questionnaire, the Index assesses people’s satisfaction with their working environment across 90 areas including: workplace design and its impact on productivity; workplace activities such as meetings and focused work; workplace features including natural light, noise and temperature control; and workplace facilities such as cleanliness, security, refreshments and IT.
Most importantly, the Index reports of personal productivity has revealed a clear ‘productivity gap’ in the ability of workplace to meet their most basic operational requirement, with just 54% of the 100,000 employees reporting the design of their workplace allows them to work productively.
