Sweltering in the office? You're not alone.

If the heat wave is causing you to swelter in your office, you’re not alone. According to the Leesman Index only 23% of employees are satisfied with the temperature control in their office and just 33% are happy with the air quality.

Although temperature control and air quality are cited by 85% and 64% of employees as important to an effective workplace, the statistics show the design and delivery of our indoor environment systems appear to be failing. However all is not lost, higher workplace satisfaction results are recorded by those able to move to a different location (cooler perhaps), returning some degree of control to employees who once had a thermostat on the wall, but are now ‘temperature controlled’ by a central building management system.

Leesman founder and ceo Tim Oldman comments: “The satisfaction figures even in our highest performing workplaces struggle to top 46% for temperature control or air quality which means we need to challenge those who procure, design and install such systems and demand more. This issue urgently needs addressing as our Index shows buildings are regularly failing employees.” About Leesman Leesman was founded in early 2010. Since then, it has been measuring the relationship between people and place in organisations of varying sizes, sectors and global reach. With data from more than 100,000 respondents, the Leesman Index is the largest independent measure of workplace effectiveness. Captured through an online questionnaire, the Index assesses people’s satisfaction with their working environment across 90 areas including: workplace design and its impact on productivity; workplace activities such as meetings and focused work; workplace features including natural light, noise and temperature control; and workplace facilities such as cleanliness, security, refreshments and IT.
