Graduates to be placed in Prime position
Following recent reports suggesting that the skills gap is preventing graduates from their first step onto the career ladder, sales and training specialist Prime has launched its ‘Graduate Training Day’ to help graduates compete in the job market.
Recent research by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) has revealed that while graduates possess excellent technical knowledge when leaving university, they lack skills critical for business, such as communication and interpersonal skills. The report shows that the UK skills gap is widening, with more than a third of firms acknowledging a shortage of skills as stifling their growth.
In fact, research by education provider Kaplan has highlighted that the technical skills graduates gain at university rank among the least desirable qualities employers look for. At just 24th out of 30 most desirable qualities, these findings are in stark contrast to recent years, where technical skills were much more sought after.
To combat the lack of desirable skills such as teamwork, confidence and communication, Prime has launched its ‘Graduate Training Day’. Taking place on the 12th August, the programme is aimed at graduates, and will teach vital business skills such as communication, selling and team working in order to improve their chances of competing in the market and to help bridge the skills gap in the UK.
In addition to the initial day, Prime will be providing on-going training support to graduates, ensuring that they pass through the probation stages and meet the skills required for their job.
With Manchester home to over 85,000 students there is a huge demand for training in the region to ensure graduates have the best possible chance to secure employment
Neil Clough, managing director of Prime, said: “These reports have highlighted how we have a real shortage of business skills trained into graduates in the UK. The areas of recruitment and sales, as well as jobs in other sectors, really rely on communication and confidence, two skillsets that are lacking in our current graduates. We are dedicated to training the workforce of the future and making sure that students aren’t just another box to tick for a recruiter.
I urge any student looking to start their career to drop in to our training day so they can get ahead of the competition.“
