All at sea…
NORTH East shoppers will get a taste of life on the ocean wave, when Sea Cadets from across the region show off their skills at a two-day event hosted by intu Metrocentre next month.
On Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September, around 100 youngsters will take part in a programme of parades, performances, drills and exercises, at intu Metrocentre, Gateshead.
The activities will begin each day with a parade from the Town Square to the centre’s armed forces memorial poppy chandelier where a bugler, on Saturday, and a piper, on Sunday, will sound The Last Post.
Then the Sea Cadets, aged between 10 and 18 and representing 18 units throughout the North East, will demonstrate some of the skills they have learned and the challenges they have faced.
Along with displays and performances, they will be encouraging shoppers to try some of the equipment they use, such as rowing machines and canoe simulators. The most junior cadets will then perform the traditional sailor’s hornpipe.
Alexander Nicoll, intu’s Corporate Responsibility Director, said: “Becoming a Sea Cadet opens up a world of exciting challenges for young people, from sailing dinghies to rock climbing and even mountain biking. Not only do they learn new skills and make friends but their confidence grows in leaps and bounds”.
“intu has supported the Sea Cadets in the North East for many years and intu Metrocentre is the perfect venue for Cadets from across the region to showcase what they have learnt.”
The parade will start at 10.50am on Saturday 5 September and at 11.50am on Sunday 6 September and further information is available at www.intumetrocentre.co.uk.
