Leeds recruiter increases employability skills of formerly homeless

Leeds-based recruitment company, Corecom Consulting, has announced a partnership with Emmaus Leeds; a charity that provides a home and meaningful work to formerly homeless people.

Corecom Consulting will be providing guidance, mentorship and training sessions to ‘companions’ at Emmaus Leeds in basic IT skills, CV writing and job application advice. The company will also provide regular voluntary support, assisting the charity at their social enterprises in Leeds City Centre.

Katrina Mattock, Community Leader at Emmaus Leeds, said:

“We are delighted to receive support from staff at Corecom Consulting to help develop the skills of our community members.

“Partnerships of this kind are a great way for companions to build their knowledge and confidence, but also for outside organisations to learn more about Emmaus Leeds.”

Emmaus Leeds supports 26 formerly homeless people (known as companions) by providing them with a stable home and meaningful work for as long as they need it. The charity has its main base at St Mary’s Street and runs two shops at Kirkgate Market where they sell donated furniture, clothes, books, bikes, household goods and upcycled products.

Dave Kirk, Companion at Emmaus Leeds, said:

“This is really good idea (me attending the course), even though I am as old as the hills I can still learn. This helps me improve myself and the business as it’s important that I use the right tools for the role I play at Emmaus in the collections office.”

Jonathan Sanderson, Managing Director at Corecom Consulting, said:

“All employees at Corecom Consulting support the Emmaus belief that ‘people who are homeless and socially excluded have something valuable to offer.’

“By encouraging companions to use and develop their career and employability skills, we can contribute to helping them make positive changes to their own life and the community around them.”

The training sessions are scheduled to be rolled out to companions in November 2015 and Corecom Consulting team members will be volunteering their services during the Christmas period, assisting with clothes sorting, furniture collections, painting and upholstering.
