Job opportunities and startups continue to rise in Barnsley
Barnsley Council has supported the creation of 667 private sector jobs, as well as the start-up of 47 new businesses and the re-location of four new businesses to the borough, according to Barnsley Council’s latest quarterly performance report.
The performance report for the second quarter of 2015/16 shows that the number of private sector jobs created is already close to achieving its 2015/16 annual target of 1,100 with 1,033 new jobs created so far this year.
In addition, the report also reveals areas that require improvement, of which the council will focus on over the next two quarters.
For instance, only 290 homes have been completed out of an annual target of 800.
Furthermore, the proportion of Barnsley Council’s local spend has risen to 39% in quarter two. With an annual target of 45%, there are still improvements to be made and these are currently being addressed.
Cllr Alan Gardiner, Cabinet spokesperson for Corporate Services, said: “The quarterly reports are an in-depth analysis of how we’re performing to meet the council’s three key priorities of a thriving and vibrant economy, helping people achieve their potential, and building strong and resilient communities.
“The quarter two report for 2015/16 highlights a number of achievements and the positive progress being made across each of these priorities. This quarter has highlighted our achievements in stimulating the growth of more and better job opportunities for residents - to not only help the local economy but also provide positive role models for young people.
“The report has also highlighted those areas that require more work which will be addressed and together we will work towards improving these areas.
“I’d like to thank all council staff, our partners, and our increasing number of volunteers - because together we’re achieving some great things for Barnsley.”
