Three generations of Boltonians launch novelty nappy business

Bolton entrepreneur Cheryl Ann Booth has teamed up with her mother and daughter to launch a new enterprise, New Mums - New Bums, with a loan from Business Finance Solutions (BFS).

Cheryl, who initially ran the company as a hobby, will now operate the business full time alongside her daughter Danielle, who will manage the firm’s website and social media presence, and mother Valerie, who will help make and sell the products.

New Mums - New Bums sells trains, cars, and cakes made from nappies, in addition to baby gifts and clothing.

Cheryl will use the loan from BFS, the North West delivery partner for the government’s £150m Start Up Loans programme, to invest in stock and develop online platforms.

Cheryl said: “I’ve always wanted to start up my own business and, having run New Mums - New Bums in my spare time for a few years it feels fantastic to be able to now launch it as a proper commercial venture – and to do it with my family as well.

“We have invested in a really high quality, diverse range of gifts for babies which is selling incredibly well and want to include more general gifting as the business grows.”

She added: “Thanks to the Start Up Loan from BFS I have been able to turn what was a successful hobby into a profitable business, employing people and with plans to grow and expand.”

The firm’s future plans include expanding its gift range, opening a retail store and turning the New Mums - New Bums concept into a national franchise.

Alex Mearns, a loan officer with BFS, commented: “Family businesses are a great investment for the future and we’re really pleased to support Cheryl Ann in taking her business to the next level with her Start Up Loan.

“A recent survey found that we spend over £220m each year on gifts for baby showers alone so the baby gifting market has huge potential for a new business.”

Alex continued: “Cheryl, her mum and daughter are exploring every retail channel open to them – from the traditional market stall to social media channels – and are really reaping the benefits in their drive for new and repeat business.”

The Business Growth Hub, which is part of the Manchester Growth Company, also worked with New Mums - New Bums, helping Cheryl to put together a business plan and formulate cash flow forecasts.
