Chester charity joins forces with solicitors for Will Writing Week

People in Cheshire are being urged to “leap into action” later this month and make or update their will for free.

Chester-based law firms Hillyer McKeown and Cullimore Dutton are teaming up with Save The Family for the charity’s Will Writing Week.

Starting on February 29, people can have a simple will made or updated in return for a donation to the charity, which is situated on the outskirts of Chester and is dedicated to helping homeless and troubled families.

The typical cost of a simple will would be in excess of £250.

It is the first time in the charity’s 40 year history that it has held a Will Writing Week.

Simon Groom, CEO of Save The Family, said: “The donations received will make a significant difference to the families our charity helps by boosting the fundraising efforts of the charity. Save The Family is extremely grateful to Hillyer McKeown and Cullimore Dutton for giving their time free of charge to support us in this initiative.”

Clare Thomas, Save The Family’s Fundraising Officer, said: “We would also ask people to consider leaving a gift in their will, however large or small, to a cause close to their heart. Such a gesture can make a huge difference to charities like Save The Family.

Ruth Heap, Head of Wills, Trusts and Estates at Hillyer McKeown, said: “We are delighted to help raise vital funds for Save The Family while, at the same time, highlighting the importance of making or updating a will.

“It is never too early to make a will and as people’s circumstances change with marriage, children, home-buying and retirement, there is a need to consider updating your will.”

The suggested donation is £90 for a standard single will or £135 for a pair of standard ‘mirror wills’ which are ideal for couples.

Among the reasons to make a will are:

* A will makes it much easier for your family or friends to sort everything out when you die.

* If you don’t write a will, everything you own will be shared out in a standard way defined by the law – which is not always the way you might want.

* A will can help reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax that may be payable on the value of the property and money you leave behind.

* Writing a will is especially important if you have children or other family who depend on you financially, or if you want to leave something to people outside your immediate family or to charity.

The Save The Family Will Writing Week runs from February 29 to March 4.
