Shopping centre goes green
A local shopping centre has revealed the figures from its latest environmental scheme to reduce its carbon footprint, improve safety and enhance the shopping experience.
Over the 12-month period between December 2014 and December 2015 a significant amount of changes have been taking place at The Alhambra Shopping Centre in Barnsley.
Some of these enhancements included swapping the mall and car park lighting from fluorescent to LED lighting making the centre and its car park brighter and ultimately safer for shoppers.
The swap has also meant that a 60% energy saving per fitting has been achieved in the centre and the carpark upgrade has also seen a significant reduction in energy use - meaning a combined annual saving of just over £25,000 for the centre and its retailers.
Waste management has also been improved by installing a general waste compactor and cardboard & polythene bailing machines. Retailers now separate their waste and this is collected from the centre where it undergoes further separation.
The bales that are created from the cardboard and polythene waste are then sold back to the waste management company giving the centre income. This has reduced the waste management annual cost from £22,568 to just £4,212.
Alhambra’s Centre Manager, John Tarrant said: “The environment and the safety of our visitors is paramount, which is why we are constantly looking for ways of improving both our carbon footprint and sustainability.”
