Graduate excels in IT Career

A former Dev Academy employee has taken his career to the next level by landing a permanent role with global IT provider, Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Karl Wynn completed a computer forensic degree at university before applying for the Dev Academy in October 2014. We wanted to know what drove him to apply for our course and pursue a career in the tech sector…

When did you first become interested in technology?

I became interested in technology at a very young age. I would play for hours on my Nintendo Entertainment System, and so I grew up with technology every day. I learnt how to use computers at a young age and spent a lot of time installing various software and games to explore what computers can do. I am still fascinated with technology today and always read about upcoming gadgets and software.

What was your first step towards a career in tech?

My first step towards a career in tech started in education. At a young age I knew which path I wanted to take in my career. I specifically went to college to study computing and then onto university, honing my skills and knowledge. After graduating with a degree in computer forensics, I joined Dev Academy to learn new skills and to help start my career in the IT industry. Dev Academy was the beginning of my leap into the sector.

How did you find out about the Dev Academy course?

I found out about the Dev Academy course through my university lecturer. It was very appealing to me as it offered an opportunity to learn a new programming language and specific IT industry skills, which would look fantastic on my CV.

Why did you apply for the course?

I applied for the course, because I wished to further expand on my programming skills. I strongly believed Dev Academy would help me get my first role within the IT Industry, and they did.

Is a career in tech all you had hoped it would be?

My career in tech has surpassed my hopes. I love working in technology. It’s a constant challenge I enjoy; facing new issues to solve every day makes the job exciting.

What advice would you give to young people wanting to get into the tech sector?

Learn a programming language. Programming is fun and you can invent and create new things.
