OVH brings smartphones flashy graphics and multimedia apps

OVH, Europe’s largest Cloud hosting company, is helping engineers, designers and other users of processing-hungry applications access workstation-like capabilities in the Cloud from virtually any connected device. With NVIDIA GRID K1 and K2 graphics cards deployed on OVH’s Big HG dedicated servers, enterprises can create Cloud-based virtual desktops for staff to use 3D graphics, video editing and other processing-heavy applications remotely from their smartphone, tablet or PC.

A virtual desktop stores users’ computer desktop profiles on a remote server, for example in a data centre, allowing them to use their desktop interfaces from any location and device.

“The use of virtual desktops is now an established practice and their use is extending all the time as the associated technologies continue to evolve,” explains Hiren Parekh, sales and marketing director at OVH UK.

“Accessing the processing capabilities of NVIDIA’s K1 and K2 graphics cards on our dedicated servers will enable professionals whose data crunching needs have traditionally tied them to a physical workstation, to finally adopt virtual desktops.”

Standing to benefit most are:

  • Product designers and engineers who use CAD and other 3D graphics software such as SolidWorks and Autodesk’s Maya and 3DS Max suites
  • Creative design studios that need processing resources for photo or video editing applications such as Adobe Premiere Pro or Photoshop
  • Users of data analytics and high-performance computing (HPC) applications.

Hosted at OVH’s data centres, the NVIDIA graphics cards are compatible with VMware and Citrix virtualisation solutions, which handle allocating graphics processor (GPU) capacity to a virtual desktop based on the level of performance required.
