Runway improvement work to begin at London City Airport after contractor chosen
Runway improvement work is to begin at London City Airport after the announcement of Lagan Construction International as the chosen contractor.
The Belfast-headquartered construction firm is to oversee the runway overlay reinforcement and taxiway widening scheme at the airport which is expected to begin in May 2016.
Work will also see the refurbishment of the drainage network, along with system upgrades to LED lighting and the installation of new centre line lighting, with work taking place outside of operational hours to ensure flights are not disrupted.
The improvement work is the first project to come after the airport was sold in February for £2bn to a consortium of Canadian investors.
Darren Grover, Chief Operating Officer at London City Airport said: “The runway overlay is a major project, made more complex by the unique location of our runway surrounded by water on three sides.
“I look forward to working with Lagan Construction International to deliver the programme and future-proof the only runway actually in London.”
Steve Turner, Director of International Operations, Lagan Construction International, commented: “Having completed projects on over 50 airports across 5 continents, airport infrastructure works are a core part of our business and our teams are experienced in providing the engineering skills and technologies necessary to deliver both airside and groundside support facilities.
“We look forward to working collaboratively with our client, London City Airport. We have a fully committed team to ensure this contract is delivered with the highest safety standards, low environmental impact, within programme and cost requirements.”
The project is expected to be completed by November.
