Lawyer to ride coast to coast for charity

Alastair Frew, a partner in the real estate team of the Stratford upon Avon office of Midlands and South West law firm Lodders, will next month cycle 120 miles coast to coast from Workington to Wallsend to raise vital funds for Prostate Cancer Research.

Riding solo on Sunday 26th June, Alastair will cycle from England’s Irish Sea coast to the North Sea coast near Newcastle upon Tyne, taking in hill climbs across the Cumbrian and Pennine mountains, and completing the 120-miles in just one day.

The challenge is Alastair’s latest fundraising cycling mission which he says he hopes will ‘kick start’ raising awareness of the disease:

“Prostate cancer kills over 10,000 British men every year, and more men than any other disease other than smoking related heart and lung failure. We don’t know what causes it, so patients often leave it too late before seeking treatment. I feel passionate about doing something to raise awareness and funds to find the cause, and get early treatment,” he says, “and this is the motivation behind the 120-mile bike ride.

“Since my first fundraising bike ride for the charity last year, I have since discovered that sadly dozens of family friends have been affected by prostate cancer. The incredible Pink Ribbon charity does so much to raise awareness of breast cancer, but we guys have nothing, and we don’t even really talk about prostate cancer. My aim therefore is to kick start conversations and in turn, awareness of this terrible disease, and raise money to fund research into finding a cure.”

Alastair is training hard for the event: “My training regime involves one 36-mile intense and hills ride each Sunday, and fitting in as many miles in the saddle during the week as I can manage,” he says. “I also do lots of trampolining which is great for building core strength, something vital for cycling up hills, of which there will be many on the coast to coast route.”

Alastair is no stranger to tackling demanding cycle rides for charity – a couple of years ago he cycled the fearsome Mont Ventoux in France on a vintage steel framed bike, and last year joined a team from Lodders who cycled 70-miles in support of rural charity Countryside Learning.
