School pupils mean business in college competition

Schools from across the region took part in a number-crunching competition alongside experts from ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) in the fourth successive annual event organised by Stockton Sixth Form College today.

Pupils from Conyers, Egglescliffe, Grangefield, Ian Ramsey and Northfield took on the role of Chartered Accountants, analysing a business case study and identifying its challenges.

In the final heat, pupils worked with college students to explore solutions for the chosen business and then presented their findings to an expert panel of judges. Two winning teams were presented with plaques by the college; Conyers (best presentation) and Egglescliffe (overall winners).

Rachel Angus, Vice Principal at Stockton Sixth Form College, said: “We are thrilled so many schools signed up to take part in our fourth annual ICAEW competition.

“The competition not only shows the strength of our links with partner schools, but with national businesses and sector bodies who are kindly giving up their time to educate local pupils on the skills and expertise needed for a career in accountancy.”

Helen Kelly, from ICAEW, said: “ICAEW run sessions like this around the country with schools, colleges and Universities to inform students about the routes and careers in accountancy and also help them to improve their employability skills.Sessions like this give students a real insight to the decisions that ICAEW Chartered Accountants have to make daily in their jobs.”
