College high-flyers recognised in celebration awards

Top achievers from a Teesside college have been recognised in an annual awards ceremony celebrating the rising stars of the future.

Redcar & Cleveland College’s Celebration of Achievement Awards saw students scoop accolades for their outstanding work throughout 2015/16

Winners included Sarah Hill, who took the Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools gong for excelling during her placement at St Bernadette’s Primary School in Nunthorpe.

Meanwhile, the Higher Education Learner of the Year Award went to Michael Lyth, who, after gaining distinctions in all of his modules opted to stay on at the college and enrol on a Building Studies HNC rather than follow the university route, and Work Experience Student of the Year was awarded to both Megan Smith and Georgina Webster, who impressed in their placements at Pennyman House in Middlesbrough.

Carpentry and Joinery student, Aaron Boyd scooped the Apprentice of the Year award after representing the college at the annual skill build competition for the North East region. Aaron went on to win gold at the competition, beating off competition from over 22 colleges.

Other notable successes included Chloe Whitney, who won both the Health and Social Care and the Further Education Student of the Year awards after battling ill health and continuing to support other family members.

John Chance, acting principal of Redcar & Cleveland College, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the dedication of our students, who have excelled in their studies and, in many cases, exceeded expectations. Some students have attained excellent grades despite having to overcome adversity, while others have demonstrated their talent on work placements and have gone on to get a job in their chosen profession.”
