York college student receives housebuilder's award
An 18 year-old student from York College was presented with the Persimmon Homes Carpentry and Joinery award in recognition of his outstanding achievement over the academic year.
Peter Wright, who attends St John’s School for the Deaf in Boston Spa, received the accolade after beating 12 of his colleagues, and plans to embark on the Level 3 Diploma in Site Carpentry, in September.
“I am really enjoying my course,” explained Peter. “It has been hard work but definitely worth it. I am learning so much and gaining lots of news skills which will help me find future employment. I feel very proud to have won this award.”
Lecturer Alex Godfrey, one of the construction tutors who nominated Peter, said: “Throughout the year Peter has demonstrated a great work ethic. He is meticulous in detail, commitment and has been enthusiastic from start to finish. Peter is certainly a deserving winner.”
This is the second year Persimmon Homes Yorkshire has sponsored the York College Construction Awards, as managing director Simon Usher explains: “We feel it is imperative, as a leading UK housebuilder, we support our local college’s construction courses, where we can.
“There is an ongoing need for skilled construction workers and it is courses such as ones available at the York College Construction & Skills Centre that will help inspire and equip the next generation.”
