Construction work on 115-bedroom Stockport Holiday Inn reaches new milestone

Representatives of Stockport Council were taken on a guided tour of the new 115-bedroom Holiday Inn Express hotel in Stockport this week, as the scheme hit a new milestone.

Regeneration company Muse Developments and building firm Eric Wright Construction showed key council figures a sample room, which was fitted out to serve as a benchmark for the site’s other guest rooms, and took them on a trip up to the roof to take in the views across the town.

The hotel forms part of the multi-million pound Stockport Exchange development – the second phase of which will also deliver a 50,000 sq ft, five-storey office building, retail space and new public realm outside Stockport train station.

Muse and Eric Wright are delivering the scheme in partnership with Stockport Council.

Both the hotel and the office block are now watertight and are due to have permanent power over the next couple of weeks, with lift, electric and plumbing systems in the process of being installed.

Muse’s development director, Wes Erlam, said: “It’s been a pleasure to show our partners the significant progress on the scheme’s construction over the past few months.

“The hotel and office are making great headway and with the public realm also taking shape, passers-by can now start to see the huge transformation which is taking around Stockport railway station.”

He added: “The scheme is providing high-quality, energy-efficient office accommodation and quality hotel rooms in a central location, as well as vastly improving the area around the railway station, creating an attractive and welcoming space for workers, commuters and visitors.”

Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Economy and Regeneration, Cllr Kate Butler, commented: “It was great to have the opportunity to go into the hotel and office and see the amazing progress that has been made.

“The transformation that Stockport Exchange has brought to this area of our town centre is fantastic and I’m excited about the opportunities that the new business district will create locally.”

She continued: “Stockport Exchange is part of the £1bn Investing in Stockport work taking place across our town at the moment.

“New developments are underway, transport links are being improved and Stockport is being transformed, I would encourage everyone to find out more about the work taking place and how you could benefit from this.”

The office building is due for completion in October, while work on the hotel will round off in December. Stockport Exchange will comprise up to 28,000 sq ft of commercial floor space and 375,000 sq ft of office space.

Real estate services firms Cushman & Wakefield and CBRE are joint agents on the scheme, which was designed by architects Aedas RHWL.
