300 jobs to be created as £35m Sheffield residential scheme gets green light
Construction work will go ahead on a £35m residential and commercial scheme on Ecclesall Road in Sheffield after council approval was granted for a revised scheme.
Developers this week underlined the regeneration benefits of transforming the site of a former car dealership between Summerfield Street and Pear Street, near the old Wards Brewery.
Sheffield-based Hallminster Ltd is now looking to withdraw an appeal to the Planning Inspectorate that followed the council’s initial concerns over plans for private and student apartments, shops and commercial units.
The company can now press ahead after talks with the council led to amending the scale and design of parts of the proposed development, which is hoped to start in 2017.
Around 300 jobs are predicted to be created during the construction phase and 100-plus permanent jobs.
Four blocks will be built to create 144 private residential apartments for single people, couples and families; accommodation for 190 students and five ground floor shops and other commercial outlets.
Bond Bryan Architects is using brick, glass and aluminium in the design, which includes a landscaped courtyard and rooftop gardens for the private apartments.
The initial application was turned down in October 2015 partly because of council concerns over the height of the proposed student block. This has now been reduced by 15%, and there have also been some other design and layout changes to other blocks, increasing the number of private apartments and reducing the amount of student accommodation.
Dan Simpson of Hallminster Ltd, said: “We are delighted that planning permission has finally been granted after all the twists and turns and we no longer have to take the case to a public inquiry.
“We are now looking forward to delivering a standout scheme that Sheffield can be proud of, which will regenerate the site and a wider area helping bring inward investment for the city, generating employment and other economic benefits.
“The design of the development is imaginative, top quality and appropriate for its surroundings which is in a great location.”
The development is to be managed on behalf of Hallminster by MAF Properties, which has been providing student and private housing in Sheffield for 25 years.
