FDR Law supports Resolution’s Westminster Lobby Day
Ruth Hetherington to raise awareness of family law in Parliament on 30 November 2016
Frodsham, 15th November 2016: Ruth Hetherington, Family Partner at FDR Law in Frodsham, is to take part in Resolution’s Lobby Day in Westminster on 30 November 2016, calling for a review of the UK’s current family law framework. The aim of the lobby day, which has been organised by Resolution, the family law association, is to call the Government to review the current constraints in family law that it wants revising in favour of a more constructive approach.
Explains Ruth Hetherington, Partner, Family Law, FDR Law: “Currently, when a couple divorce, there is a legal requirement for one of the couple to allege a fault of some kind, unless they are prepared to wait at least two years after separating, when a no-fault ground can be used. This antiquated system does not consider the best interests of the whole family, where forcing couples to blame each other causes unnecessary pain and upset. Other topics that Resolution feels need highlighting include rights for cohabiting couples; and how the Government’s decision to close 86 courts across England and Wales will affect the most vulnerable sectors of society.
“The lobby day will give Resolution members like myself the opportunity to meet with MPs and hopefully help influence the government’s decision to make the policies that are required to move family law forward.”
The organisation, which is made up of 6,500 mainly lawyers, is committed to the constructive resolution of family disputes and is therefore calling for all members, country-wide, to pledge their support and attend. Trained to come up with sensitive solutions that consider the needs of the whole family, Resolution members promote a sensitive and cost-effective approach to resolving family disputes in the least acrimonious way.
