Durham plasterer celebrates substantial growth

Durham-based plasterer, G D Contracts, is reporting significant growth as a result of its work with Barratt Developments North East. The company, which was set up by Gary Hendry six years ago with just six employees, now employs a staff of 40 and carries out approximately £1.5m worth of work annually for Barratt, on a range of housing developments across the region.

G D Contracts, based in Bishop Auckland, serves the entire North East region and offers dry lining services, plaster-boarding the interiors of houses. The company is currently working on 13 sites with Barratt, including the Mount Oswald development in Durham and Leven Woods in Yarm. Since the company’s inception, the value of the work carried out with the five star housebuilder has increased from £200,000 to between £1.5m and £2m in 2016.

Gary Hendry, owner and founder of G D Contracts, commented: “Barratt is the only builder for which I now need to work. The support they have offered to a small company like mine has been invaluable and they have been great to me since I set the company up. It’s a pleasure to be able to work with them on high quality sites across the region and I look forward to working with them more and more in the future.”

Barratt Developments North East currently works with 77 subcontractor companies across the region in a range of trades, such as bricklayers, roofers and painters, with a turnover for subcontractors and suppliers of £74m in 2016 alone. Scott Lester, Construction Director at Barratt Developments North East, commented: “Working with local subcontractors is of great importance to us as a company and something we pride ourselves on. This year alone we have been able to offer contracts to 18 new subcontractors. We believe we have a responsibility to support local labourers and in turn the regional economy and we are looking to increase the number of local subcontractors we work with throughout 2017.”
