Model Exam Success For JWPCreers Tax Assistant

A North Yorkshire accountant did so well when sitting a professional qualification that the examination board has used her paper as ‘model answers’ on its website.

Tax specialist at accountants and business advisers, JWP Creers, Laura Train, has had her answers in the Chartered Institute of Taxation’s UK VAT, SDLT and IPT Advisory paper posted as examples of best practice for future candidates.

Laura Train, an assistant tax manager, who joined JWP Creers’ York office in 2006 as a trainee accountant after completing her A Levels at York College and later passed her Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualification, was one of only 28 per cent of candidates to pass the exam paper, regarded as the ‘gold standard’ for tax practitioners, in which she achieved a 58 per cent pass mark.

JWP Creers funded the qualification and provided study support such as time off to revise, travel and accommodation costs for Laura, who works in the firm’s nine-strong tax department, when she sat the three examinations in May 2016 in Leeds with final e-assessments in the autumn.

She said: “I’m really pleased both at passing and having been regarded as giving model answers. The examination was very hard work on top of working full time, I was studying for 20 to 30 hours a week. Fortunately, JWP Creers was very supportive making sure I had work relevant to my studies, and my husband helped by taking on the majority of the housework!”

JWP Creers partner responsible for training, Jill Campbell, says: “We pride ourselves on our high levels of technical expertise and like providing career training for school leavers so we can develop our own staff in our approach to client service. Laura’s success is further evidence of why this works so well. She has worked very hard for this exam and we are all very pleased for her.”

Laura Train will attend the admission ceremony to the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) at Draper’s Hall, London, in April.

JWP Creers, based at Park Street, Selby and York Science Park, York, is among York and North Yorkshire’s largest firms of accountants, taxation professionals and business advisers with six partners and more than 60 staff.
