Proofs That Show Travelling Helps Education
Travelling shapes you and your life in a major way. If you are venturing into an unknown territory, you will do things that you wouldn’t do otherwise or normally. In the process, it will teach you a lot of things.
Travelling reminds of a Danny Boyle movie called 127 Hours. The protagonist travels to a remote canyon where a boulder accidently traps his arm and he does everything it takes to survive. The movie is a class apart and for those who haven’t watched must do!
Although this not a review about 127 hours instead this is meant as an analogy to lessons it will lay out for you as a result. Let us see some of the ways in which travelling will educate you on things you never thought about learning.
You learn different languages:
You may know how to speak English because it is an international language. But at times, you may be travelling to certain parts of the world where speaking the native tongue is beneficial. If you speak to locals or ask for the direction they normally respond to you in their local language.
It is the business class or cities where English can be found, else if you are commuting through a suburb or some countryside of a foreign nation, you will be lost. GPS tracking and road guides can help but a human guiding you the directions, hits close to home.
Some people learn the language by attending classes. For everyone else, there is travelling. And by travelling you just not learn the language but learn dialects, accents and the slangs it entails. Practical learning is way different than sitting in a class.
You learn to value different cultures:
You learn about diversity. In a world of 7.4 billion, there are tens and thousands of different cultures. Some weird, some exciting and some downright fall into the taboo category. If you are not travelling, you wouldn’t know what types of cultures exist.
But amidst all the diversity, you fill find certain commonalities in the form of love for nature, love and ancestors which are holding each of the cultures together, somewhere and in some fashion.
Education is a phenomenon whereby you don’t just acquire but spread it by applying it. So once you know about different cultures prevalent in the world around you, you tend to value and respect them for what they are. It inculcates tolerance.
You learn about the history:
If you learn nothing you will definitely learn about the history of the place. We all have studied of several civilisations that existed before us and cataclysmic events that transpired in the past which gravely appealed to our senses. By travelling you might actually get to visit those areas.
Isn’t this exciting to be living a certain part of the history? To witness what often felt like a myth or no less than a legend, when we read about it in the classroom. Museums, streets, historic landmarks, galleries, palaces all speak of that place’s past.
The changes, conflicts and different rules a particular place has undergone over time are evident. While speaking to the locals you realise how authentic where the classroom lectures and those being narrated by native people.
You comprehend the world today in different context:
You begin to understand why it is, what it is. The socio-economic order, political dynamics, and the structure of the world in totality; all makes sense to you. When we consume media our perceptions and opinions are formulated but by exploring them first hand you realise the views presented were prejudiced or were incorrect.
You view nature differently:
By travelling, you not only venture into buildings and fine dining places but travelling also has to do with natural beauty. The lakes, the mountain ranges, the tropical rain forests, the deserts, the safari experience and what not!
You will be amazed at the beauty of nature when you connect with it, whereas mostly you are exposed to air and noise pollution when travelling to and back from work on a daily basis. The inner peace and tranquillity can be achieved through stepping outside of your comfort zone.
New things usually follow:
It is inevitable. You will not remain the same person. Your view towards the world will not be the same anymore.
Social skills are compounded:
Whether or not you are a people’s person, your social skills will be enhanced. If you already were; good for you. If you were not previously, you will be a master at social skills. Negotiation is the ability few have mastered and you will be one of them.
Social skills are soft skill and they cannot be learnt by applying for a course somewhere.
You become independent:
If you have been always dependent on your parents or someone in your house, travelling will render you independent. You will know how to survive within scarce resources, say in terms of money. Point being, you will figure it out without bothering anyone.
So above are some ways which prove why travelling is superior to any form of formal education.
