New test for deaf apprentices hailed by DSN

The Deafness Support Network (DSN) believes new testing advice for apprentices will open up the skilled job market for hundreds of young D/deaf people in Cheshire.

The Government has taken action to address an issue where apprentices must complete the English functional school test.

Many deaf apprentices are unable to pass this compulsory aspect of all apprenticeships and as a result until now they have been unable to complete their courses.

But from this year apprentices will be able to pass the test by obtaining a British Sign Language qualification.

Skills Minister Robert Halfon said: “For those whose first language is BSL, this simple change will allow them to achieve their full potential.

“I am committed to breaking down barriers to ensure people of all ages and all backgrounds get on the ladder of opportunity through an apprenticeship.”

DSN operations executive Gill Reeder welcomed the announcement, saying it could open the door to employment for many young deaf students.

“This is a fantastic decision that will have a real impact on young people,” she said.

“Across Cheshire so many young people work their way through apprenticeships only to find at the end they cannot get their final diploma because they are required to pass a test which they simply cannot do due to their deafness.

“As well as being demoralising for them it can mean they don’t meet the requirements for employment. With deafness already proving a barrier to employment, this has made life harder for many young people.

“This is a common sense move by the Government that will improve the lives of many young adults with deafness.”

Brian Cadwallader, DSN’s New Leaf Coordinator continued: “this has been long awaited and is a real positive decision that will break down barriers and have long reaching benefits for young D/deaf people seeking opportunities that apprenticeships give.”
