Local business helps to bridge industry skills gap
As part of Barratt Developments’ on-going efforts across Yorkshire to bridge the growing skills gap in the construction industry, a team of qualified graduate trainees have attended an innovative careers event to engage students at Driffield School in the East Riding. The careers event saw the local students benefit from an insight into the industry as well as the opportunity to discover more about the opportunities available to them.
Showcasing the variety of roles and stages involved in the housebuilding process, in an effort to promote the industry and its various career options to college students across the region, Barratt Developments’ team helped the local students gain the confidence and insight to consider a new career option.
Dan Bunby, Site Manager at Barratt Developments, commented: “This is one of many local initiatives we are rolling out across the county to help showcase the construction industry to youngsters. I myself started as an apprentice builder, so there really are loads of opportunities for young people with a business such as Barratt. Our team is working hard to raise awareness about the opportunities available in construction – not least by providing one on one advice to those who are at such an influential stage when it comes to making key decisions about their future career.”
Steven Mattinson, Construction Director at Barratt Developments, added:
“We are delighted that Driffield School embraced the opportunity for us to showcase the different career options available to its students. When local businesses show students an insight into the world of work, it has a really positive impact on both their confidence and aspirations for the future – we want to ensure everyone has a real insight into what’s available to them, in addition to the high salaries and opportunities up for grabs in construction.”
