Build Salford: Construct your future with traineeship opportunities

Around 20 young people from Salford are set to benefit from construction-based traineeships, thanks to a new city-wide partnership.

Eleven local organisations – united to form Build Salford – will pave the way for 16 to 24-year-olds to gain a real insight into a career in the construction sector.

Build Salford – a collection of social housing providers, education providers, construction firms and Salford City Council – are holding a recruitment event on Wednesday, 5th April at Salford City College – where young people interested in working in the industry can attend.

The 16-week course, which will commence late April, gives access to substantial work experience, classes and tutorials, delivered by industry experts, and practical hands on training to acquire new skills.

The recruits could find themselves moving onto apprenticeship roles or jobs.

Debbie Ward, Director of Apprenticeships & Community at Salford City College said, “This project will provide fantastic opportunities for local people, and will hopefully lead to the majority moving into apprenticeships with the companies involved.

“Traineeships are designed to support young people with their skills development, as well as the knowledge and attitude required to succeed in an apprenticeship.

“With the incredible support from the organisations involved the opportunities will be amazing for young people.”

The organisations committed to supporting the project are: Salix Homes, Together Housing, Great Places, Affinity Sutton, Seddon, Casey, Galliford Try Partnerships, Keepmoat Homes, Keepmoat Regeneration, Salford City Council, Connexions, Procure Plus and Salford City College.

Salford housing providers Salix Homes and Together Housing, along with several others are acting as the catalyst for the project, encouraging their construction partners to support the initiative.

Salford City College are the main educational partner, with Connexions and Salford City Council, via their Salford Futures Programme, providing valuable expertise and recruitment support.

Sue Sutton, executive director of operations at Salix Homes, said: “Here at Salix Homes, we’re dedicated to creating opportunities for local people as well as managing and creating homes.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for enthusiastic young people who want to make that initial and vital step in the construction industry, working with expert organisations, who will guide them every step of the way.”

Roy Cavanagh MBE, Seddon training executive, said: “Seddon, along with the other excellent construction companies involved in Build Salford, are very keen to support projects that encourage young people to enter into a career in the sector.

“We all have a duty to provide the best possible experience for the youngsters involved and this project will do just that.”
