Celebrating Sunderland’s Healthiest Workplaces

Companies across Sunderland were celebrating at the Better Health at Work Awards ceremony on the 16th March, held at the Quayside Exchange in Sunderland. The Better Health at Work Awards reward companies who give the health and wellbeing of their employees the highest importance. Fourteen local companies received an award yesterday including housing provider Gentoo, clothing manufacturer Berghaus and Foundation of Light, Sunderland AFCs registered charity.

Amacus, who have delivered Sunderland Councils Workplace Health programme for the last 8 years and organised the celebration event, congratulated participating companies for their proactive effort in providing support to their workforce to help raise awareness of making healthier lifestyle choices.

Christine Hall, MD at Amacus said: “Sunderland council are truly committed to supporting businesses to have the opportunity to take a proactive approach to supporting their employees. It is so encouraging to see the investment in businesses and people as a priority for the council”.

Guests at the event, sponsored by Collingwood Legal and Equality North East, were entertained by former rugby league star, Jimmy Gittins with his motivational speech.

Councillor John Kelly, Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Wellness and Culture said: “Employees are the lifeblood of any organisation and the Better Health at Work Awards are given to companies who demonstrate a commitment to providing health advice, support and information to their workforce. In addition to funding the scheme, the council is also a member of the Better Health of Work Award and I am proud that this evening we have been recognised for our third year of continuing excellence”.

Sunderland College received a gold award for their activities, including a week long health and wellbeing event, support for Mental Health Awareness week and a focus on getting staff more physically active.

Helen Willan, Chair of the Wellbeing Action Group, Sunderland College said: “We are really pleased to have achieved our Gold award as part of the Better Health at Work Award Scheme. At Sunderland College, this has enabled us to achieve much more than we could ever have expected when embedding health and wellbeing into the workplace and it has helped us to diversify the ways in which we have done this for both our staff and students”.
