Dentists scoop accolades in national awards

TWO of the North East’s leading dentists have been recognised for their work after going head to head in the industry’s most prestigious awards.

Dr Ken Harris and Dr Richard Coates of Riveredge Cosmetic Dentistry – which has surgeries in Sunderland and Newcastle – were shortlisted in a record-breaking nine categories at the UK Aesthetic Dentistry Awards, but found themselves pitted against each other when they were both shortlisted in the same two categories.

But in the end it was a case of one each for the colleagues, as they took an accolade apiece at the awards ceremony in London last month.

Dr Harris, who has a world renowned reputation for his expertise, was highly commended in the Restorative Single Arch category while Dr Coates received the same honour in the Single Tooth Composite division.

“We were the only practice to have two dentists receive awards, and we were delighted to pick up one each,” said Dr Coates, who trains regularly in the USA and is an active member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD).

“It was always going to be interesting as we went up against each other, and I think getting one each in the way we did was probably the most diplomatic outcome.”

Dr Harris, who has won countless awards over the years, is one of just two Fellows of the British Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry (BACD) which involves him teaching other dentists around the UK. He has become recognised globally for his skills and now teaches dentists throughout Europe and worldwide.

“I’m thrilled that both myself and Richard have picked up awards this year,” he said. “It was a new experience for us both going head to head with each other, and I think we were both relieved to take one each.

“The Aesthetic Dentistry Awards is one of the biggest highlights in the industry’s calendar and I’m very proud that Riveredge Cosmetic Dentistry was chosen for two highly commended awards.

“To be picked out twice in two different categories is confirmation of the high standard that our patients receive, and is further proof that we are a practice which offers a world class service to our clients.
