A cut above the rest for care home

A NEW luxury care home set to open next month has announced its collaboration with local salon, The Lounge Hair and Beauty in Bedlington.

Baedling Manor, owned by care providers Alcyone Healthcare North East, will coincide its launch with the opening of ‘The Lounge at Baedling Manor’, providing a salon that is open to the public as well as for residents, day care clients, staff and their families and friends.

Centered within the home on Bedlington Front Street, the Dementia friendly salon will be headed up by owner of The Lounge Hair and Beauty, Shirley Sanderson.

She said: “Opening the new salon space within Baedling Manor is a wonderful opportunity not only for us to expand our skill set into another location but also by creating jobs and training opportunities.

“We have had many customers come to us for years so it is nice to think we are growing with them by providing them with an additional but familiar service within a safe environment.

“All of our staff at The Lounge at Baedling Manor are fully trained Dementia Friends, and will benefit from having the added support of the home’s carers if needed.

“Our specialist service aims to be a real tonic for our customers and gives them a chance to have a good old fashioned friendly chat over a cuppa whilst enjoying hair and beauty treatments.”

With an inspired classic-style décor to create an ambiance of luxury mixed with familiarity, the state of the art facilities includes raised salon backwash sinks at various heights for a more comfortable and dignified shampoo service for customers with physical limitations, a mirrored cutting and drying area and reception seating area, along with a unique barber station for gentlemen, and a dedicated fully equipped beauty spa and nail bar.

Managing director of Baedling Manor Darren Taylor said: “With many years working with older customers in her immaculate salon off Netherton Lane, Shirley was an obvious choice to collaborate with. With her whole emphasis on making her customers happy and comfortable, I knew her hand-picked team would be the right fit for Baedling Manor.

“Hairdressers often have close relationships with their clients and act as ‘keepers of stories’ so being empathetic Dementia Friends, they can also offer understanding and emotional support.

“A salon is a very natural setting for reminiscence and having a bit of a pamper alongside other members of the community is integral to maintaining dignity and a person’s life skills though providing purposeful activity. It is also a place where they can regularly go for a treat then meet friends for some refreshments in our café which will also be open to the public by free membership.”

With state-of-the-art facilities, the home will also boast other dedicated communal areas to encourage regular social interaction including a shop, cafe, a cinema room, library and information centre, piano bar, function suite, internet and activities room and an enclosed sensory garden and orangery.

The multi-million pound care facility will provide the highest level of residential and dementia care for up to 50 residents as well as providing an out-reach care package to guests requiring day care, overnight, respite and home care.
