IKEA announces plans to create 480 new jobs in Sheffield

Furniture retail giant Ikea has announced plans to create 480 new jobs in Sheffield as part of a UK-wide expansion programme.

Ikea is set to open new stores in Sheffield, Exeter and Greenwich by 2018, resulting in the creation of 1,300 jobs.

380 of the new jobs will be for the Sheffield store, whereas an additional 100 roles are set to be created at a call centre in the city.

These expansion plans will bring the Swedish furniture chain’s total number of UK staff to 11,700 and take its number of large outlets to 22.

The new roles will be in several different departments, including store management, food and beverage, customer relations, sales, interior design, IT, sustainability and marketing.

Gillian Drakeford, country retail manager for Ikea UK & Ireland, said: “This year we are celebrating Ikea’s 30th anniversary in the UK, and we are seeing more demand from customers for more stores in areas closer to where they live.

“We’re pleased that our three new stores opening in 2017 and 2018 will make us more accessible to many people and continue to offer our inspirational home furnishing solutions at affordable prices.

“As we continue to expand, we’re delighted to bring investment to new areas across the country and create new opportunities for local communities.”
