Winn Solicitors Sponsors Local Schools for Walk to School Week

Winn Solicitors is sponsoring five schools in Newcastle so they can take part in Walk to School Week, an annual campaign to get children moving. The campaign is organised by national charity living Streets, and runs between the 15 – 19 May.

The funds provided by Winn Solicitors will go towards Walk to School week resource packs for KS1 and KS2, which will help get pupils walking. The resources are designed to help challenge and encourage children to try walking to school and can be a stepping stone to year-round activity. Last year, over 14,000 classes took part in Walk to School Week; that’s approximately 400,000 children walking to school.

The schools which Winn Solicitors are sponsoring are: Byker Primary School, St Lawrences RC Primary, West Walker Primary, Tyneview Primary and St Vincent’s R C Primary.

The theme for 2017 is ‘city to seaside’, with resources taking pupils on an imaginary journey from the dramatic skylines of the city through to charming coastal areas. Each challenge pack contacts everything needed to run the five-day walking challenge, including a classroom wall chart, teacher and pupil wall chart stickers, pupil activity diaries, pupil reward magnets and teacher instructions.

Walk to School Week is an initiative run by the UK’s charity for everyday walking, Living Streets, to help reverse the decline in walking to school. Since the 1970’s, the amount of primary school children walking to school has almost halved.

Joe Irvin, Chief Executive at Living Streets, said: “It’s wonderful to see Winn Solicitors generously donating funds to help children in the local community. “The majority of children are not getting their recommended 60 minutes of daily exercise. At Living Streets, we know that encouraging more children to walk to school is one of the best places to start – for now and for the future.

“Walking to school is a free and easy way for children to build exercise into their day. Plus, physically active children are more alert and ready to learn. “I’d encourage everyone to get involved and take part in the walk to school campaign.”

Marketing Manager Amy Thompson said: “We are delighted to be involved in Walk to School Week for a second year running. It’s great to enable local schools to take part, and contribute to the health and wellbeing of children in our local community. We would encourage more businesses in the area to take part!”
