Company behind Hackney favourite Martello Hall set to open new Brixton haunt
Albion & East, the operator of Martello Hall in Hackney, has agreed a deal that will see it opening a new venue in Brixton this September.
Situated at 250 Ferndale Road, the cafe and bar site, which will carry the moniker Albion & East, encompasses 4,579 sq ft over a basement and ground floor level along with an area for outdoor seating.
Housed within The Department Store development by Squire & Partners, the new venue will be focused on providing a relaxed coffee-fuelled work environment during the day with a coffee hatch on Stockwell Avenue to snag hot-footed workers.
During the evening cocktails and music will come to the fore to provide what the brand has dubbed an ‘all-day appeal’.
Nick Weir, Joint Managing Partner at Shelley Sandzer, who helped secure the letting said: “It’s great to see a budding operator like Albion & East continue to grow and in such a brilliant location.
“We know this tenant will provide a space that is perfect for employees and locals, feeding into the community and truly putting Brixton on the map. The area is seeing considerable regeneration and we are pleased to have been involved in another deal in Brixton.”
Architectural practice Squire and Partners obtained approval to transform Toplin House, a Brixton landmark that has stood on the site since 1905, into its new HQ along with a restaurant, gallery and working space back in 2015.
Formerly an annex to the Bon Marche department store, the development has reimagined Edwardian building while retaining some of the property’s original elements and characteristics.
The aim is to turn the landmark into a creative, retail and community hub, along with capacity for a purpose-built post office to further its uses for the local community in and around Brixton.
George Squire of Squire & Partners described Albion & East as a ‘perfect tenant’ for the building and hailed the ‘expertise’ of the property agents in securing an occupant that suited the historical flavour of the site.
Shelley Sandzer acted for Squire and Partners in the deal while Albion & East dealt directly.
