Channel 4 heads to Tyneside to find animals new homes

Channel 4, accompanied by Professor Noel Fitzpatrick, Steve Jones and Kate Quilton is heading to the North East for a one-week marathon attempt to find new, loving homes for abandoned pets.

The team will be broadcasting from Newcastle’s Dog and Cat Shelter (Benton Lane, NE12 8EH) every night from 7 -11 August.

The hope is that all the shelter’s many dogs, cats and rabbits will find new families who can give them the homes they deserve – along with encouraging the nation at large to adopt rescue pets.

The aim is that this initiative will in turn highlight the animals available in many other rescue centres around the country, so that families considering a pet will find their local shelter and head in their direction. The programme, being made by Channel 4, is now looking for potential pet adopters to view the animals available and anyone interested can book a slot before moving on to the adoption process.

Professor Noel Fitzpatrick said: “Through raising awareness of the fun, love and hope that rehoming an animal can bring to families everywhere, I genuinely think that we speak a language of joy and compassion, and I think that this is a fantastic message to put out into the world right now.”

Steve Jones said: “I love animals, I love live TV and I love The Supervet. This is going to be a great show with a great purpose. I can’t wait!”

Leyla Rutter, Chief Executive at Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter said: “The show offers a fantastic opportunity for our gorgeous animals to find loving homes.

“Rescue pets make the best pets, with individual characters and a lot of love to give. We are all so excited to see what the programme brings and can’t wait for Noel, Steve and Kate to meet some of our amazing residents” she added.

The shelter is committed to ensuring that all the animals are responsibly rehomed and go to loving and dedicated families.

The programme will also bring into sharp focus the fact that although Britain thinks of itself as a nation of animal lovers, with more than 16 million pets, every year around 250,000 domestic animals are abandoned to the care of rescue centres.

Anyone interested in seeing the animals can email animalrescueweek@blastfilms.co.uk or call 0191 266 1167 to book a time slot. The series is a Blast! Films production for Channel 4.
