Five Common Causes of Confined Space Incidents

Working in confined spaces always has a certain risk involved. A person working in such spaces can never be sure that the current operation would be carried out successfully and is completely safe. Being a risky space to work in, confined space incidents are quite common and can land an individual in trouble. There are a number of factors that might cause confined space incidents. Some of these are as mentioned below:

  1. Lack of knowledge

Limited or lack of knowledge is one of the major factors leading to confined space incidents at workplaces. An individual assigned to perform a particular task might have limited awareness about the ways in which such operations are to be executed. This, in turn, increases their risk of facing situations that might even cost them their lives.

  1. Lack of training

Employers, these days, are increasingly opting to avoid offering training to their employees. This is done owing to the high costs and time involved in offering this training. However, this does not lead to any fruitful results to the employers as the lack of training generally increases the associated risks and might not allow them to handle confined space rescue systems properly. Lack of proper training is, thus, becoming a growing factor behind confined space incidents.

  1. Lack of proper equipment

It is important to provide proper equipment to employees performing confined space rescue operations. This is to ensure that the required operation is carried out without any flaw. Moreover, the lack of proper equipment might lead to confined space emergencies that can also be difficult to handle.

  1. Lack of supervision

Proper monitoring and supervision of the team performing a confined space operation is important to make sure that there are no emergency situations arising. If close monitoring of a particular operation is not done, this might lead to confined space emergencies that can only be handled with confined space rescue systems.

  1. Lack of complete standard operating procedures

To ensure complete safety of the employees, it is important to follow the complete standard operating procedures. This is done to ensure that the employees stay safe and secure as well as the required operation is performed without any flaw. In case, an employee missed to follow these procedures, it can lead to the confined space hazards and land the person into trouble.

Confined space incidents can be avoided if one performs the required operation with utmost care and attention. Lack of the same can land not only one individual but all into trouble.
