Italian restaurant with wine bar and deli counter launching in Blackburn
Blackburn’s culinary scene is set for a boost next month with the opening of a new 70-cover restaurant promising “authentic Italian cuisine”.
Launching in the former Blackburn Rovers store on Church Street, Gioia Italiano will comprise dining space, a wine bar and deli counter offering take-away meals.
The man behind the project, Mike Hajewskyj, said he hopes to create around 20 new jobs.
He commented: “I am Blackburn born and bred and we can see that Blackburn is at a very exciting stage in its rejuvenation.
“We hope that Gioia, with it’s relaxed atmosphere, will attract people who want to meet for a quick drink, need a speedy lunch in the restaurant or want to grab a lunchtime bite from the deli counter, as well as a great evening venue for romantic meals, get-togethers and celebrations.”
Mike continued: “Our authentic Italian cuisine will also draw on lots of local produce from people that you already know and love. Much of our fish will be from Mayers and our meat from Tom Wood, both on Blackburn Market.
“We have such amazing suppliers on our doorstep, it’s great to be celebrating fantastic local suppliers too.”
Alongside its wines and cocktails Gioia plans to serve drinks from Three B’s Brewery, Hopstar, The Big Clock Brewery and other local producers of craft beers.
Speaking further, Mike said: “We’ve had tremendous support for the project from other local businesses as well as the council and we are very excited to be bringing this concept to Blackburn.
“With more restaurants and bars opening in the heart of town, Blackburn is finally rediscovering its heart and we want Gioia to be a key part of the town’s success.”
Gioia will open its doors at the end of November.
