Manchester’s newest street paper StreetWise launched to tackle homelessness in the city
Manchester based street paper StreetWise is calling on the people of Manchester to support their movement to combat homelessness by standing together as one. StreetWise is a 21st century street paper for the homeless community, launching nationwide this week. Made up of a group of volunteers, programme participants, readers, general public and anyone is who is ready to tackle homelessness in a realistic and positive way.
Following the proactive stance of Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, who donates 15% of his salary to a homelessness charity in the city, StreetWise aim to empower those who are homeless to reclaim their place in society through incentive, self-discipline and a ground-breaking rewards programme. StreetWise is unique in the way it keeps the money raised within the community, it is completely non-profit and will give people that have found themselves living rough a step on ladder to find hope again.
Founded by Dave Wotherspoon - a veteran Royal Engineer, who has experienced homelessness and street paper culture, and Jennifer Forrest, a multi-skilled conscript and happy collaborator. StreetWise was conceived in a belief that homelessness cannot be solved by individuals, but by communities.
StreetWise will publish four titles: StreetWise, a weekly, general interest read: Stood Down, a monthly for the armed forces community; Under the Rainbow, a monthly voice for the LGBTQ community; and Crash, a monthly street paper for generation Y. All titles will be available in print and through online subscription. Offering affordable street papers to a readership that need support, the street paper recognises a group of people not currently represented. The street paper will launch in Manchester this week.
