RTC North brings national STEM programme to North East

A programme aiming to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers will be rolled out across the North East, thanks to Sunderland-based RTC North securing the contract.

Part of a national initiative led by Engineering UK, The Big Bang Near Me programme is designed to get young people excited about science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Holding fairs across the UK, the initiative promotes science shows, hands-on exhibits, interactive workshops and the opportunity to meet local and national employers to young learners.

The business support agency has a long affiliation with science and technology, currently holding the STEM Ambassador Hub North East contract. It also delivers a regionwide mentoring programme in partnership with The Careers and Enterprise Company, both of which have a significant focus on STEM engagement.

Jamie Ollivere, RTC North sales and marketing director, said: “The Big Bang Near Me programme will play a vital role in inspiring future scientists and engineers.

“Historically, the North East led the way in engineering excellence and innovation. Today we have a real shortage of young people choosing STEM careers and organisation have problems recruiting stem skills. We aim to try and influence the choices of young people with what promises to be an exciting programme of events.”

Arran Goodchild of Big Bang Near Me said: “We are very excited to be working with RTC North and seeing the STEM community rally together to engage and inspire the young people in the North East.”
