St John’s Buildings leads on Richardson-Ruhan case as judgment handed down

A leading barrister at St John’s Buildings has secured a major judgment for her client in the high profile Richardson-Ruhan divorce proceedings.

Sally Harrison QC and Abigail Bennett, instructed by Michael Chapman of JMW Solicitors, acted for Tania Richardson-Ruhan for financial relief in her divorce from her former husband, the entrepreneur Andrew Ruhan.

The final hearing took place during October at the Royal Courts of Justice before Mr Justice Mostyn. In the judgment handed down, the judge accepted the case advanced by Mrs Richardson-Ruhan and made a number of findings regarding Mr Ruhan’s true wealth, and his failure to provide the Court with a true and accurate picture of his assets and income.

Mrs Richardson-Ruhan pursued proceedings against her husband when he alleged following their separation that he had lost the entirety of his £200m fortune and was now several million pounds in debt, leaving him unable to meet her claims.

Mrs Richardson-Ruhan maintained throughout proceedings that Mr Ruhan was not presenting the court with a true reflection of his wealth and that he had engaged in non-disclosure of his resources.

Proceedings will now continue into 2018, when the court will decide the extent of an appropriate award to Mrs Richardson-Ruhan based on the findings.

St John’s Buildings, one of the largest sets in the north of England with chambers in Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield and Chester, has built a strong family law practice in recent years. Led by Sally Harrison QC, the practice now has more than 70 barristers working across SJB’s four osites, on all issues relating to family law.
