How to Keep Your Productivity High at Work
Workplace productivity ebbs and flows. Like a wave, it can be up one minute and sunk to the deepest depths the next. It is up to you, as an employee, to help regulate your days in order to take charge of your own productivity.
So, here’s a few things to keep your productivity high in the workplace no matter what the day throws at you:
Regular Breaks
Breaks are vital in order to keep yourself motivated throughout the day, as it is easy to drop off if work is too constant. Your brain becomes too tired to focus. Burning out is all too common when it comes professions with few to no breaks, so it is important to make breaks just something you do in your day in order to reinvigorate your thinking power.
An hour lunch and at least two fifteen minute breaks on either side should be considered, just to ensure your productivity is kept as high as possible. It also gives you something to look forward to if you do feel yourself dropping off!
Deadlines
Productivity is never higher than when there is a looming deadline. It may seem unfair to create a self-imposed deadline, but giving yourself a specific time to finish a piece of work is a great motivator. After all, too many people put off work if there is no clear timeline for completion and you don’t want to be one of these people.
Create a stream of realistic deadlines in your week to keep to, then watch as your productivity levels are maintained right up until that date.
If fake deadlines seem a little mean, then you can always consider them as goals. With certain incentives to reach them each week, such as a buying a nice bottle of wine or chocolates for yourself on Friday if you get the work done. This will keep productivity up but in a much less pressing way.
Air Quality
Your health and fitness have a huge impact on your overall productivity. Sick days, feeling ill and other things associated with being under the weather can easily bring down the productivity of a whole workforce.
An effective ventilation system is needed in order to ensure that air quality is as high as possible year round, making illness and airborne issues much less likely. Especially at this time of year, when people are regularly sick with the flu and other viruses.
Avoid Unnecessary Meetings
Meetings are a drain on the workday. It’s a fact that at least half an hour or more is lost when a meeting is planned, let alone the amount of time actually spent in the meetings also. No meeting is ever truly 100% efficient, so this gap of lost time can be an extremely significant loss of your overall day. It can also interrupt your flow of work, ruining productivity for the day.
Try having a standing meeting every now and then. It will force you to think on your feet - literally - and make the likelihood of wasting time much less. At least, in theory!
If you can avoid the meeting altogether, then even better.
Multitask Less
Lots of people put a lot of effort into being a good multitasker. In fact, many employers list it as a very important skill in life. But, the truth is that multitasking is actually a gigantic waste of time.
If one task is not fully dedicated to, it can come across as half-finished or lacking full effort - because that is how the task was completed. You may be able to complete three tasks at once, but they will be all of a poorer quality than if you took them on one by one.
It is also much easier to maintain productivity when you remove multitasking from the equation, as you will feel much less overwhelmed by your work.
Overall, productivity is something which is typically down to every person to maintain. Remember to give yourself breaks, create realistic goals for yourself and tackle problems one at a time. You will be surprised by the rate at which your productivity increases!
