Pioneering women’s business network to host career-building event in Newcastle
Women in Sustainability, the professional business network helping women to thrive in careers connected to creating a more sustainable world, is hosting a career development event in Newcastle in partnership with Newcastle Business School.
Facilitated by Rhian Sherrington, executive coach and founder of the Women in Sustainability network, the session aims to bring business women together from across the region to discuss the values which are driving their career choices and working life.
Attendees will hear first-hand from Louise Hunter MBE, director of corporate affairs at Northumbria Water and Dr Jenny Davidson, MBA director at Newcastle Business School. Both successful business women will share their career journeys and discuss the obstacles and opportunities they’ve encountered along the way.
Dr Jenny Davidson, MBA director at Newcastle Business School has over 20 years’ experience working in sustainability and Corporate Responsibility. Her research interests focus on the role of the individual on the journey towards sustainability.
She said: “Without understanding our values and what is really important to us, life and especially work, can very easily just happen to us, rather than being something we are actively shaping and creating for ourselves.
“This event is for professional women in businesses that are building a greener, healthier and happier world. If more women want to enjoy a meaningful career which has a positive impact on the world, we also need to consider and understand the navigation tools vital to achieving it. Through personal accounts and plenty of lively discussion, this event aims to help women to navigate their ‘green’ career path.” ‘Carving out a successful career in sustainability’ takes place on 15 March between 5:30pm and 8:30pm at Northumbria University’s Newcastle Business School.
Women in Sustainability came from the realisation of how powerful women can be when they come together around a common purpose and shared values base. Its founder Rhian Sherrington experienced first-hand the negative impacts of being in a gender minority as she progressed her career into senior management, alongside motherhood, in the sustainable transport sector.
Retraining to become an executive and career coach, she became very aware of the common struggles and issues experienced by her female clients working across the environmental sector were experiencing.
At the same time, being new to running her own business, she entered the world of women-only business networking and following her intuition, Rhian started running coaching-led group events in Bristol and Women in Sustainability was born.
There is now a growing national network, with hubs in London, Manchester, Oxford and Newcastle, based at Northumbria University’s Newcastle Business School. Women in Sustainability events attract business women from a diverse range of organisations, including private, public and charitable sectors, multi-national corporates, SMEs, entrepreneurs and sole traders.
Their areas of specialism include resource management, waste, energy, transport, water, food, facilities, farming, communications, research, policy, campaigns, media, housing, retail and professional services.
