Football comes home for Higgs & Sons’ charity tournament
The World Cup may be taking place over 3,000 miles away in Russia, but the real footballing action was under way in Stourbridge with the Higgs & Sons six-a-side tournament which raised more than £10K for charity.
The annual event took place at Stourton Park, the home of Stourbridge RFC and saw 42 teams play for the honour of being crowned champions. The winners, PKF Cooper Parry, took the title without conceding a single goal, beating PD Financial in the final, a team that featured former Aston Villa player Stiliyan Petrov in its line-up.
The tournament, a much-anticipated fixture in the Higgs fundraising calendar, was another huge success, with all proceeds going to Higgs’ charity of the year for 2018, Dudley Mind.
Richard Griffiths, a Partner in the firm’s Corporate team who helps to organise the event said: “We have been running the tournament since 2006 and it is always rewarding to see so many people come and support us year upon year.
“Businesses and professionals come from across the West Midlands to take part and although there is always a healthy level of competition on the pitch, once the final whistle blows there is a real sense of everyone coming together to support a good cause whilst enjoying a fantastic day out.”
Higgs has been working alongside Dudley Mind since January to raise much-needed funds and awareness for this important cause. At the beginning of June, a team of novice rowers took to the water to compete in the Bewdley Pub and Club Regatta. Next month, the ‘Peaky Climbers’, a team of intrepid Higgs walkers will take on the Three Peaks challenge in aid of Dudley Mind, which aims to promote recovery and wellbeing for people affected by poor mental health in the Dudley borough.
“Year on year we seem to do more to support not just our chosen charity of the year, but a range of local organisations,” said Tim Jones, Head of Higgs’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.
“The annual six-a-side tournament is one of several keynote events which help to raise much-needed funds. The support we receive is fantastic and we’d like to thank everyone who came along once again to help make the event so special.”
